The new version of the 1.17 snapshot, 20w48, added a few new materials to Minecraft which could make gameplay very interesting.
First, dripstone, a new stalactite/stalagmite for of block. There are dripstone blocks and pointed dripstone. If a stalactite is unsupported, it will fall harming any entities underneath it. The damage is relative to the height of the stalactite, for example 2 blocks of falling would deal 2 hearts of damage, and 3 blocks would deal 4 hearts.
Players can also take damage if they fall onto stalagmites, like a spike trap making them very useful as a defense mechanism. For stalagmites damage taken is also relative to height so for example falling from 3 blocks the player would take 8 hearts of damage, whereas one block would only deal half a heart of damage. If a source lock is placed above a stalactite, it will drip water/lava which can fill a cauldron placed underneath it.
Freezing, a way of dealing damage to most entities. The newest item, powder snow in a bucket, allows you to place down powder snow to freeze your enemies and possibly kill them. Powder snow can be obtained by placing a cauldron in a biome where it is snowing, and then use a bucket on it. Powder snow blocks cannot be mined, even with silk touch. Leather armor can prevent an entity from freezing if worn.
A lot of items had their textures updated, such as the spyglass, amethyst block, the compass, lodestone, candle and clock.
